Topaz is found in a rainbow of beautiful colours, while citrine's fiery golden tones symbolise the bright warm sun. Both are known to be calming gemstones and citrine was esteemed throughout history for bringing energy and vitality, hence was known as the "healing quartz".

Our Favourite Facts about Topaz:

1. Pure topaz is often colourless and can be mistaken for a diamond. In fact, the 1680ct clear topaz in the Portuguese crown, one of the world’s most famous gemstones, was originally thought to be the biggest diamond on the planet until it was revealed as topaz.

2. The most valuable colour of natural topaz is red. It is so rare that less than 1% of all gem-grade topaz exhibits this shade. These topaz stones have a reddish-orange tone and are known as Imperial Topaz.

3. Topaz is known as a "cooling crystal" for its unique ability to cool down after exposure to hot temperatures.

4. Topaz is a relatively hard stone, making it a great choice for an alternative engagement ring or jewellery you will be wearing every day. It rates 8 on the Mohs hardness scale and is pretty resistant to scratching. That’s not to say it’s invincible - like diamond, topaz can be chipped or cracked with a hard blow.

    Our Favourite Facts about Citrine:

    1. The name citrine comes from the old French word “citrin,” meaning lemon. It is a variety of the mineral quartz.

    2. During the middle ages, another name for citrine developed - it was called the ‘merchant stone’ as it was said to attract prosperity and success.

    3. Most citrine jewellery is actually heat treated amethyst or smokey quartz. The natural yellow colour of citrine is rather pale, but the ‘enhanced’ stones have deeper colour, sometimes with a slight reddish tint.

    4. Most citrine is mined in Brazil. The largest citrine ever discovered weighs a whopping 2258 carats. Originating in Brazil, it is displayed in a museum in Washington.

    5. Citrine has a Mohs Scale durability of 7, meaning it is not very easily scratched and it is durable enough for daily wear.
