Opals are beautiful gemstones. Long treasured for their otherworldly beauty, they display a kaleidoscope of flashing colours when held in the light - shining a opalescent glow that’s entirely unique to this stone.

The birthstone of October, opals are delicate gemstones that need to be treated with care. Ranking between 5.5-6.5 on Mohs scale of hardness (a measurement of gemstone durability), means they are more durable than pearls but much less durable than diamonds.

Our easy three step care guide will ensure your opal jewellery is kept in pristine condition:

1. Always remove your opal jewellery before playing sports, gardening, household cleaning and bathing. A good rule of thumb is to remember that opals, like pearls, should be the last thing to put on and the first thing to take off.

2. Opals should not be cleaned with harsh cleansers or an ultrasonic cleaner as these can damage the opal. Opals can be cleaned with a soft dry cloth, or gently using a little bit of mild soapy water and a soft cloth, rinsing briefly afterwards and drying immediately and thoroughly. It is not recommended to soak or submerge opal jewellery in water, as opals can absorb water which may spoil the stone.

3. When you're not wearing your opal jewellery, it is best stored wrapped in a soft cloth or in a lined jewellery pouch or box. Store separately from other jewellery to avoid scratches. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, as it can cause the opal's colours to fade.
