The enchanting emerald is May's birthstone. You can read more about the history and significance of this lush green gemstone in our journal post here.

Measuring between 7.5 to 8 on Mohs scale of hardness, emeralds are less durable than other valuable gemstones, such as diamonds, sapphire and ruby, meaning they are more susceptible to chipping and cracking and require special care.

How to look after your emerald jewellery:

1. Avoid exposure to heat and sunlight: Emeralds are sensitive to heat and light, which can cause them to become brittle and damage their colour. Avoid exposing your emerald jewellery to direct sunlight or high temperatures, such as leaving it in a hot car or near a heat source.

2. Store your emerald properly: Store your emerald jewellery in a soft pouch or jewellery box, separate from other jewellery to prevent scratches and damage. It's also a good idea to store your emerald jewellery in a cool, dry place to prevent exposure to moisture.

3. Clean your emerald carefully: Clean your emerald jewellery regularly using a soft cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, which can damage the gemstone. Instead, use a mild detergent mixed with water and a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your emerald jewellery. It’s not advisable to soak the emerald for long periods, instead use these simple steps:

  1. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and put some mild dish soap in it.

  2. Use a soft toothbrush to remove the oils and dirt accumulated on your emerald piece. Use the brush to get into those hard-to-reach areas and clean them thoroughly.

  3. Fill a second bowl with lukewarm rinse water. Submerge the jewellery fully in it and check to make sure that no soapy residue is left on your emerald and/or other gemstones.

  4. Dry the emerald jewellery with a soft clean towel. Once the jewellery is dry, it is ready to be stored or worn again.

    4. Be considerate with your emerald jewellery: To avoid chips or scratches, remove your emerald jewellery when doing household chores, exercising, or engaging in other activities that could cause damage.

    5. Take your emerald to a professional Jewellers: If your emerald jewellery needs more extensive cleaning or repair, take it to a professional jeweller who specialises in working with emeralds. They can clean and restore your emerald jewellery safely and effectively, while also checking the settings to make sure your gemstone is secure.

By following these expert tips, you can help keep your emerald jewellery looking beautiful for years to come, so your cherished pieces can be passed down to future generations.
