Getting engaged is an exciting time, marked by the exchange of a beautiful engagement ring. Ensuring the engagement ring fits perfectly is crucial for both comfort and security. Let our experts guide you in selecting the perfect size for your ring .
Understanding Ring Sizes
Ring sizes are typically measured in either millimetres or inches, based on the circumference of the finger. In Ireland and the UK, sizes are denoted by letters, ranging from A (37.8mm) to Z (68.5mm) and beyond. Each size increases by approximately 1.25mm in circumference.
How to Measure Ring Size
Measuring a ring size is not an exact science. Often a ring that fits you perfectly in the morning will be tight on your finger by evening time, it may be tight on a hot day and slide off more easily on a cold day. Remember, your fingers can swell or shrink due to temperature, time of day, and activity levels. For the most accurate measurement, visit us in store. At Ryan Thomas we have a variety of ring sizers and can account for the nuances of your finger shape and size.
We understand that this is not always possible especially in the case of a surprise proposal. In that case we advise you to bring along a ring that fits your partners' finger well and we can measure it in store.
How Do We Get the Perfect Fit?
- We consider the band width: Wider bands fit more snugly, so if you're choosing a ring with a wider band, you might need to go up a half size for comfort.
- We account for knuckle size: If your knuckle is much larger than the base of your finger, ensure the ring can slide over the knuckle without being too loose on your finger. Equally if you have tapered fingers you may need to a snugger fit.
- We enquire about weather and your activities: If you live in a place with frequent temperature changes, your finger size can fluctuate. Similarly, activities as simple as walking can temporarily increase finger size.
Resizing Your Ring
If the ring doesn't fit perfectly, we offer resizing services. Resizing is more straightforward for simple bands but can be complex for rings with intricate designs or settings. Generally, a ring can be resized up or down by two sizes, but this can vary. The cost depends on the metal, design, and the amount of resizing needed. Our instore team of jewellery advisors will be able to guide you through the process. Our Goldsmith resizes rings by inserting gold, we do not "stretch rings", as this can weaken the setting.
Choosing the right size for your engagement ring is essential for comfort and longevity. Taking the time to measure accurately and consider factors like band width, knuckle size, and daily activities can ensure your ring fits perfectly. Remember, if the ring isn't a perfect fit initially, resizing is usually an option. With the right preparation and professional help, you can find a ring that will be cherished and worn comfortably for a lifetime.
